SPS Commerce will start charging for MAX agents in 2027

SPS Commerce confirmed on its Q3 2026 earnings call, held October 29, 2026, that the agentic AI features inside its MAX platform are moving from included functionality to a billable line item. CFO Joe Del Preto and CEO Chad Collins told analysts directly that "we will be charging for the MAX agents in 2027." The vehicle for that charge has a name now: the MAX Agent SKU, and management told investors "we'll have the MAX Agent SKU on board in 2027 to be another product there."

This is a different announcement than the MAX general-availability launch from September, when SPS opened the platform to all fulfillment customers. The Q3 call is the monetization and performance follow-up: the company is now disclosing adoption numbers, customer-win data, and a pricing roadmap that didn't exist at GA. If you manage EDI connections through SPS Commerce, or you're evaluating the vendor against TrueCommerce, Cleo, or IBM Sterling, this call gives you concrete figures to plan a 2027 budget around instead of marketing copy.

The numbers that matter for EDI managers

SPS reported revenue of $197.6 million in the third quarter of 2026, compared to $189.9 million in the third quarter of 2025, reflecting 4% growth, alongside adjusted gross margin of 73% in Q3, up 170 basis points year-over-year. But the figures that actually change how you should benchmark an EDI provider are the onboarding metrics:

MetricFigureSource detail
Trading-partner compliance after onboardingWithin 24 hoursHundreds of suppliers have achieved full compliance with new trading partners within 24 hours since adopting agentic onboarding
Complex ERP integration timelinesUnder 30 daysMany complex ERP integration and onboarding projects completed in less than 30 days, with plans to shorten further via AgentIQ
Customers moved to supplier readiness by the Onboarding Agent300+An Onboarding Agent has already moved more than 300 customers to supplier readiness
Validation Agent error resolution speed29% fasterA Validation Agent unifies real-time network data, retailer and supplier maps and the history of past trading partner setups... resolving errors an average of 29% faster
MAX Agent co-development customers~20, expanding to ~200Already in co-development with a group of about 20 customers in the MAX agent, and we expect the early adopter program for that to be expanding to about 200 customers as we turn from kind of Q4 to Q1

Why this is a competitive data point, not just a vendor press release

SPS isn't just reporting internal efficiency gains, it's telling investors that onboarding speed is closing deals. Management stated plainly that agentic onboarding is strengthening their competitive position, particularly when new customers plan to integrate their ERP system with the SPS network, and in Q3, this accelerated onboarding capability was a deciding factor in securing multiple new customer wins. Collins went further on the follow-up question, noting those customers "specifically chose SPS Commerce based on the speed at which we could onboard them to our network."

That's a sales argument now, not a feature list bullet. If you're issuing RFPs that include TrueCommerce, Cleo, IBM Sterling, or Orderful, expect every one of them to field a version of this pitch within the next few quarters, because 24-hour compliance and sub-30-day ERP integration are now the reference points prospects will ask about by name. The same pressure extends past retail-focused EDI into carrier and freight connectivity. Platforms like Cargoson, MercuryGate, Descartes, and Blue Yonder are facing similar expectations to compress onboarding for new carriers and trading partners, not just retail compliance checklists.

What changes for readers, and by when

The practical shift depends on where you sit today:

  • Existing SPS customers should raise the MAX Agent SKU directly with their account rep this quarter. Pricing hasn't been published, and management signaled they'll favor adoption over margin at first, per the strategy above, but "free" ends in 2027.
  • Teams benchmarking EDI providers should use 24-hour compliance and sub-30-day ERP onboarding as the floor for RFP comparisons, not a vendor's best-case marketing claim.
  • Build-vs-buy evaluators should factor in that managed EDI providers are now competing on AI-assisted onboarding speed, not just transaction volume pricing, which shifts the math on maintaining an in-house VAN or AS2 setup.

On timing, SPS itself gave a rough window. CFO Del Preto said the company has "probably got another 12 months of roadmap on agentic onboarding," moving from simpler web-form customers across to more complex ERP integrations one at a time. Expect the tooling, and the pricing conversation, to keep moving through most of 2027.

The caveat: this is still EDI, with EDI's usual limits

Don't read the headline numbers as margin transformation yet. Management was candid that the direct financial impact so far is small: "the gross margin impact specifically from agentic onboarding, frankly, is kind of minimal," with most of this year's margin gains coming from process work done over the prior 12 to 15 months, not AI. The company also absorbed a real headwind: Amazon policy changes and the Revenue Recovery divestiture reduced reported growth by 500 basis points and led management to lower its outlook, a reminder that even the dominant EDI network vendor is dealing with shifting economics on its platform, not just AI upside.

Faster onboarding compresses the timeline. It doesn't remove mapping, testing, or trading-partner-specific compliance rules from the process. If you're planning a supplier rollout, budget for the same validation steps, just on a shorter clock.

What to do next

If you're on SPS Commerce, put a line item in your 2027 budget planning for AI-agent pricing and ask your rep now what's bundled versus billable under the new SKU. If you're running an RFP for EDI or multi-carrier connectivity software, whether that's SPS, Cargoson, or anyone else on your shortlist, ask each vendor directly how they handle agentic or automated onboarding and request numbers, not adjectives. SPS just set the bar at 24 hours and 30 days. Make every vendor you're evaluating answer to it.
